THERMAL IMAGINGThermal imaging has come a long way since its initial development by the US Armed Forces, and is now an important inspection tool for building envelope evaluations. Infrared cameras capture thermal differences in materials showing shape and contrast variables across a given area. These thermal differences, or anomalies, can often be attributed to areas of missing, deteriorated, or misapplied insulation, air leakage zones, locations of water infiltration at wall sheathing, and framing members.
For example, if water infiltrates into a wall cavity, it will quickly deteriorate the underlying sheathing and insulation. When an infrared survey is taken of this wall, it typically will show a thermal anomaly in the area of moisture intrusion, since the decayed wall area does not maintain the same thermal capacity as the rest of the unaffected wall components.

J2 Building Consultants has four Certified Building Science Thermographers (CBSTs), who have been trained in the use and application of infrared cameras in the field of building science. With the aid of an infrared camera, J2’s consultants can quickly evaluate large building envelope areas for anomalies. We can then focus our investigations on these areas of concern, reducing investigation openings and costs, saving our clients time and money. |
